"Her blood...sings to me."
He feared hurting her - killing her. But he was more terrified of his affections for her. So he did what he had to do to save her, making a bold move and choosing someone else to be with him. She was the right path to take - a fellow vampire who lived the same lifestyle as him, as his family. She was the natural way to go, everything he could hope to find.
"I know what you're...trying to do."
She wanted to know him, wanted to figure him out. Even his decision to try and push her out of his life was useless when he himself could not stay away. To rid herself of the jealousy, she sought out a friend's help to make it through. He gave her hope and care that she deserved. He was everything she could ask for.
"She...will never be...yours."
He could only dream of her, to be able to be with her. The dream became a reality when she came to him searching for a way out of her misery. They were happy, if only for a moment. She was the girl he had longed to be with, but she was not the girl his heart was beating for. She was not the girl he's meant to be with.
It was all triggered by an unexpected event.
Edward Cullen had saved Bella Swan from getting killed by an incontrollable vehicle, putting his family's secret out on the line. She had seen him; he was right in front of her just before she blacked out. Even his immediate departure was not missed by her. He had pulled her away from Death's grasps, but his actions harmed another innocent human. The knowledge is slowly eating him up, but he knew he had to save Bella. He could not let her die. A simple act of heroism prompted a series of events - the transformation of the shape-shifters, the discovery of their secret by a human, the slow tearing up of his family.
They were coming.
With the word now out that the Volturi are preparing to pay the Olympic coven a visit, the Cullens could only hope to do a great deal of damage control. But when the Quileute werewolves found out about the impending arrival of the age-old vampires from Italy, the spark of anger that had been lit by Edward's reckless move had now turned into a burning fire, and Jacob is prepared to fight - for the people, for Bella, for vengeance. The treaty no longer mattered. It was personal.
A war is about to break out.
