Character Name: Umeko Sada Wakahisa
Age, both physical and literal:22
Species: Human
Physical Appearance:
Mei, as a lot of her friends call her, is a fairly typical Asian girl. Half Chinese and half Japanese, she is quite small and thin, with long black hair and very deep brown eyes. She has a very soft face with delicate, feminine features and a tentative though genuine smile. When she laughs, her eyes seem to sparkle with happiness, every emotion she feels filling every aspect of her face for all to see.
Basic Personality: Umeko, known to her friends and family as Mei or Sadie (to her American friends), is a very easy person to read. She hides very little and can often find herself in trouble with friends with her inability to hide her emotions. She enjoys the simple things in life and loves nothing more than to do whatever small deeds she can, finding more happiness in seeing someone smile or seeing an animal or plant flourish than in earning any other more tangible reward. When she is not busy working, though she enjoys doing so so much, it is often hard to find her doing otherwise, she spends much of her time ‘studying’ as she calls her hobbies of learning traditional skills and arts of various cultures. Sadie is rarely loud as a rule and prides herself on upholding her family’s honour by being the gentle, polite woman her parents brought her up to be despite being so far from her home. However, she does tend to be bubbly with her closest friends and family, simply because she finds it hard to hide her affection for them.
Although she is often likened to a geisha, though this is partly due to her natural grace from having studied ballet for many years as a child and learning tai chi with her father, both of which have given her a knack for ladylike behaviour, she is far more modern than most people would expect. She thrives on keeping up to date with the latest technology and gadgets and hates being out of the loop when it comes to knowing the latest trends, whether she chooses to follow them or not. She also likes to let loose once in a while, usually when in Japan, and go clubbing, letting out her more outgoing side out of sight of her parents and blending in with the crowd.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
Strengths: ballet, tea ceremonies (learned from her grandma), dealing with people, playing the violin and koto
Weaknesses: a workaholic, spending money (she likes to buy things when she visits her parents in Tokyo), sushi (though she hates how cliché it is, she adores it and can rarely turn it down when she has the chance to get some)
Likes and Dislikes:
Likes: sushi, classical music, studying, working, throwing parties for her close friends
Dislikes: feeling like she isn’t doing anything useful, being ‘behind the times’ though she does like to learn about older civilisations
Extras: N/A
Background/Character History: 300 word minimum.
Umeko was born on the outskirts of Kofu, in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan to a Japanese father and Chinese mother. While she grew up in the quiet, far more nature-oriented area of the city, her upbringing was far from rural. Her father being a businessman who spent most of his time in Tokyo, she was given the best her family had to offer, attending the best schools and taking all the extracurricular classes her mother could arrange from the earliest ages possible.
When she was 8 years old, Mei’s parents decided that living in Kofu was no longer practical. The best schools for her were in Tokyo, and as her father worked in the capital, it was a fairly easy decision for them to move from the relative calm of Kofu to the hustle and bustle of modern Japan. Mei thrived on the sights and sounds and loved her new school, gaining high grades in every class she took. Even so, and despite her exceptional musical talent becoming more and more apparent, she remained an unassuming girl, only adopting the louder, more raucous behaviour more common among people her age when she hit her teens and began to spend more time out with friends at clubs and wandering the streets of the city, taking in the nightlife.
At age 19, Umeko decided it was time for her to do something different and see the world, perhaps putting her love of the country she called home to good use. With this goal in mind, and a fluent knowledge of English under her belt thanks to her mother’s foresight in teaching her to be more ‘multicultural’, she packed her things and travelled to America, looking forward to learning more about the country from which so many of the tourists she met back home had come from. Though she loves her new life in America, working wherever she feels her skills and knowledge will come in handy as she travels the states, she is still extremely close to her parents and visits Japan as often as possible (thanks to funding from her father), often taking her friends with her, should they wish to go so that they can share her love of one of the oldest surviving civilisations in the world.
Role Play Example: 400 word minimum.
Slipping on her shoes, Mei quickly grabbed her bag and hurried from her bedroom. She spotted her father in the living room, sitting at the table, and snuck up behind him, wrapping her arms around him from behind and resting her chin on his shoulder. “More work papa?” Feigning a pout, she slipped into the chair beside him, chuckling softly as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, hugging her gently as she eyed the paperwork on the table in front of him. “I thought you promised you would rest tonight, or am I going to have to stay home and make sure you do?”
Letting out a giggle as he swatted gently at her nose and laughed, she hopped out of her chair out of reach. “You’re getting slow papa. All that paperwork is making it hard for you to keep up with the younger generation.” The loud guffaw that followed her as she kissed his cheek and hurried out of the room made her grin, the smile only spreading as she entered the kitchen, the smell of her mother’s famous gyoza making her mouth water.
“You’re sure they don’t want to come in for food?” Mei rolled her eyes at the question and kissed her mother on the cheek, grabbing a tiny piece of spare carrot before heading for the door. “I already told you mama, we’re eating later. If they come in, you know we’d never get to the restaurant.” Smiling at her, Mei turned and took her coat down from its usual hook, pulling the door open and slipping out just as her friends neared it.
Draping her coat over her arm, she slipped the other hand through one of the girls’, steering them quickly away from the door and grinning at the looks on their faces. Her mother was known for her cooking and she knew that if they had so much as stepped inside, their night out would soon become a night in. Though she had to admit, her mother wouldn’t have minded at all. That was one thing the two shared: their love of entertaining and seeing the looks on guests’ faces when they had enjoyed a meal and pleasant company. Tonight, however, her father had arranged a table for them at his favourite restaurant as a birthday present for Mei’s best friend and she was looking forward to the evening out with good friends, good food and hopefully, afterwards, good music.
